Every beeswax thread ends up arguing the same few numbers. Here's the math this page actually runs — and which of those numbers are conventions you're free to change.

What's the right beeswax-to-oil ratio for a salve?

The common convention is 1:4 — one part wax to four parts oil — and it gets argued in every thread for good reason. More wax sets firmer, more oil goes softer, and neither is wrong; it depends what you want under the lid. That's why the ratio here is a setting with 1:4 as the starting point, not a rule baked into the math — the parts fields take whatever your recipe runs.

Why do lotion bars use a different ratio?

The lotion-bar convention is 1:1:1 — equal parts wax, oil and butter — because a bar has to hold its shape out of the tin, and that takes far more wax than a salve does. On a 300 g batch, 1:1:1 works out to 100 g of each. Same math, same fields; only the parts change.

How does the calculator turn parts into grams?

Batch weight times each part, divided by the total parts. A 300 g batch at 1:4 has five parts, so the wax is 300 × 1 ÷ 5 = 60 g and the oil is 240 g. Parts are what let one recipe scale honestly — a small test batch and a market batch split exactly the same way.

How many tins will a batch fill, and what does each one cost?

Whole tins only: the calculator divides your batch by your fill weight and rounds down, then states what's left in the pot — 300 g into 55 g fills is 5 tins with 25 g over. Fill weight is your field too, since tin fill weights are one of the argued numbers; weigh one filled tin and type what you find. Cost per tin prices the grams in each fill from your per-kilo wax, oil and butter costs, then adds the tin itself — the part of the cost that's easiest to forget.
